????The 2001 USTC Awarding Ceremony for Scientific Achievements was held on April 5th . Individuals and groups were cited for their outstanding achievements in scientific research. Heads from Anhui Provincial Government and leaders of USTC---Tang Honggao, Zhu Qingshi, Fan Weicheng, Jing Dasheng, Li Guodong, Cheng Yi, Wang Guangxun, Han Yiwang, and Hou Jianguo attended the ceremony. Representatives of the faculty and staff from the schools, departments and divisions, along with journalists from People's Daily, Science and Technology Daily, Chinese Education, Anhui Daily, etc. also witnessed the ceremony.
????This was the first time for USTC to have issued awards on a large scale for scientific achievements. There were 6 kinds of awards and about 300 individuals who shared a total of RMB 1,113,700. The awarded groups were: 1) the research group that won the 2001 Second Class National Natural Science Award for A Catalytic-Assembly Route to Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes at Moderate Temperature (led by Prof. Qian Yitai, academician of CAS); 2) the research group, which won the 2001 Second Class National Award for Progress in Science and Technology for An Artificial Monitoring and Policy-making Support System for Preventing and Reducing the Calamities of Anhui Province (led by Prof. Chen Guoliang); and 3) the research group that won the 2001 Second Class National Award for Progress in Science and Technology for Fire Safety in Large Space Buildings (Group Head: Prof. Fan Weicheng, academician of CAS). These three groups mentioned above received a bonus of RMB 120,000 Yuan each. The research group, led by Prof. Guo Guangcan, also received a bonus of RMB 40,000 for their winning the 2001 Second Class CAS Natural Science Award for the Fundamental Research in Quantum Information.
????Prof. Fan Hongyi received RMB 49,000 for his papers cited in 37 international papers a total of 83 times, and for his 18 papers on physics and mechanics which have been collected by the Scientific Citation Index (SCI). Both of them ranked No. 1 in China. Prof. Xie Yi received RMB 2,000 for his papers cited 25 times. His was ranked No. 9 in China.
????Other authors with a total of 2,366 papers accepted by SCI, EI and CSTPC shared the bonus of RMB 662,700. In addition, inventors of some important patents were also given awards.
????The ceremony was presided over by Vice-president Fan Weicheng. Vice party secretary Jin Dasheng announced the name list of the winners. President ZHU Qingshi delivered a keynote speech for the ceremony. He said that USTC had made many achievements in scientific research last year and gained a great deal of praises world wide. He also said that we should treat these achievements properly and shoulder the task of constructing a high-level international research university.
????Party secretary Prof. Tang Honggao congratulated all the groups and individuals who were awarded and thanked the local government for supporting the development of USTC. He hoped that all the faculty and staff would follow the examples of the awarded people to unite together and contribute to the construction of a high-level university.
