On the afternoon of April 3, 2002, the School of Earth and Space Science of USTC was established. Party-secretary Tang Honggao and President Zhu Qingshi attended the unveiling ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Dou Xiankang, deputy dean of the school. Other university heads including Fan Weicheng, Li Guodong, Wang Guangxun, Hou Jianguo, Wang Shui, Chang Yinfe, Pan Zhongxiao and Wang Keqiang also attended. In his speech, President Zhu first congratulated the establishment of the school. Then he said that looking back upon the history of the development of science and technology, people were increasingly aware of the earth's environment and space. Therefore, earth and space science undoubtedly would be the focus and a cutting edge of science and technology research in the 21st century. He hoped that the newly founded school would assemble resources and powers to enhance the research level of USTC in these fields and would contribute to the construction of a high-level university. Chang Yinfe, dean of the School of Earth and Space Science, expressed that the school would use the advantages, unite all the faculty and staff to keep the leading position in the field of earth and space science research, and endeavor to reach world statue as soon as possible. Shi Yaolin, academician of CAS and USTC alumnae, was on behalf of the guests to deliver a speech. Liu Zhenxing, academician of CAS and chief scientist of the "Double Star" project, and Prof. Liu Zhicheng, director of the Meteorology Bureau of Anhui Province, attended the ceremony. Other distinguished guests were: Prof. Wang Yingjian from CAS, Prof. Zhang Peng, deputy director of the Earthquake Bureau of Anhui Province, Prof. Gong Jiancun, leader of the 863-703 expert groups, Prof. Chen Xiaofei, deputy dean of the School of Earth and Space Science of Beijing University, and Chair holder Prof. Wu Jingsheng from the University of Maryland of America. The aims of Earth and Space Science are recognizing the earth and the space around it by using mathematics, physics and chemistry, and understanding the motion of the earth and the effects of other planets on it. Then, to utilize the resources effectively, to protect the environment, to prevent and reduce calamities, and to provide scientific foundation for sustainable development. The School of Earth and Space Science of USTC has high caliber faculty including 2 academicians of CAS, 24 professors and 38 associate professors. The school is also undertaking many national key fundamental research and development projects, national natural science foundation projects and other important projects. In addition, the School of Earth and Space Science of USTC is the advanced research center of the Third World Academy of Sciences(TWAS).
