19 Disciplines of USTC Entitled National Key Discipline
The Ministry of Education (MOE) of China issued the result of the Evaluation for Key Disciplines in National Higher Education Institutions on Jan. 18th, and 19 disciplines of USTC were entitled the National Key Discipline. USTC had only 4 key disciplines before, namely, Fundamental Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Condensed Physics and Solid Mechanics.
The evaluation was launched in March, 2001 and aimed to implement the "Development of Education Plan in 21st Century" and to optimize the allocation of the education resources by assembling the national and local funds to set up some research bases to cope with the major problems in the course of the economic construction and social development. This evaluation sticks to the principle of "adjusting the structure, planning rationally, supporting the best and evaluating impartially". The evaluation procedure includes application, experts' assessment, conference assessment and authorization by the administration. To achieve the fair competition, all the key disciplines authorized by the former National Education Committee are cancelled the titles and had to participate the evaluation again.
Altogether 1786 disciplines from 227 colleges and universities took part in this evaluation. USTC organized 23 disciplines to participate the application and finally 19 disciplines were awarded the titles. The total number of key disciplines of USTC ranks eighth in China, but the largest increasing rate.
