Hefei Anhui
People's Republic of China
The University
The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is the only university affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It was founded in Beijing in 1958 and the first President was Dr. Guo Muoruo, who was concurrently President of CAS. In the early 1970s it moved to Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, and has now grown into a comprehensive key national university of sciences, engineering, management science, and liberal arts. During China's 7th and 8th Five-year Plan periods, it was one of the universities that enjoyed special financial support from the government. Presently, it has been selected as one of the first group of universities to receive priority investment for upgrading institutional building under the state's Project 211.
Prof. Zhou Guangzhao, the present Honorary President of USTC, is also the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, academician of CAS. Secretary of the Party committee of USTC is Prof. Tang Honggao, alternate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. President of USTC is Prof. Zhu Qingshi, academician of CAS, and member of Academic Degree Committee of the State Council.
USTC now has 7 schools and colleges, which include 24 departments, the Special Class for the Gifted Young, 2 common core education sections, 36 undergraduate programs, 57 master's degree programs, and 39 doctoral degree programs, and 8 mobile postdoctoral centers covering 28 disciplines. Among the above mentioned academic programs, there are 3 national bases in mathematics, physics, and mechanics for fundamental research of science and cultivation of teaching talents, 4 national key disciplines, and 10 CAS key disciplines. It is also the key base for the education of doctoral students of CAS. USTC also has 4 national key research institutions, 6 CAS key research institutions, and a first-class campus computer network and maintains an excellent position among the universities of China.
The headquarters of USTC has a staff of about 3360 personnel, of which there are more than 1650 teachers. There are 10 academicians from CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and 369 professors, of which there are 280 Ph. D advisors, and 825 associate professors. Progressive young teachers occupy more than 80% of the total and they infuse youth and vigor to USTC.
There are altogether over 8, 000 students in USTC, among which there are 550 doctoral students, 1, 300 master students, and more than 6, 000 undergraduate students. The admission scores and comprehensive quality of undergraduates have remained among the best of the universities of China.
USTC has strove for continuous innovation centered around China's national goals. After the reform and opening of China to the outside world in 1979, USTC was the first to propose resuming the system of National Matriculation Examinations. USTC founded the first special class for the gifted young as well as the first graduate school in China; initiated the sending of large groups of teachers to engage in cooperative scientific research; initiated trial classes that do not differ in disciplines. USTC was also the first to set up the Major-minor System, the Bachelor-Master-Doctor Division System (allowing students to get their master degree in 7 years and doctoral degree in 9 years), Master-doctoral Education in Succession System, and Second Bachelor Degree System. USTC improves the overall quality education to enhance students' creativity. In the past 40 years, USTC has cultivated more than 40 thousand high-quality alumni, who have accomplished outstanding achievements and won high prestige for USTC. Of all the academicians of CAS and CAE who are below 60, one-seventh are alumni of USTC.
USTC has actively participated in high-level scientific research. Since 1978, USTC has received over 800 outstanding awards in scientific research. Among them, more than 250 were at the international level, 40 were at the national level, and 400 were CAS, provincial, and ministry level awards. The scientific papers of USTC published internationally every year and their citation has remained one of the best of China's universities. It has also been chosen as one of the top 13 China's universities by Science of the U. S and Research of France. USTC is now one of the universities in China that have international influence.
USTC is also actively engaged in extensive international exchanges. Every year more than 200 foreign experts come to teach or do research here. Some world-famous scientists such as C.N. Yang, T.D. Lee, S.C.C. Ting, and Y.Z. Lee were engaged as honorary doctors, honorary and guest professorships. Every year over 300 scholars are sent abroad to visit, study, or do cooperative research. USTC has signed agreements of cooperation and exchange with over 40 universities from 20 countries and districts.
The implementation of the strategy of " reviving China via science and education" and especially the implementation of Facing the 21st Century Education Revival Action Project and the construction of the National Knowledge Innovation System have brought USTC a new opportunity for its development. The Ministry of Education, CAS, and the Government of Anhui Province have reached an agreement to build USTC into a first-class university with their concerted efforts. The staff and students of USTC are determined to grasp this perfect cross-century opportunity. We will comply with the request of "Facing the 21st century, build a first-class university, and cultivate first-class talents" presented by President Jiang Zemin at the 40th anniversary of USTC. We shall continue to strengthen our reform and innovation, and endeavor to build USTC into a moderate-scaled, high-quality, reasonable-structured, world-famous university with distinct characteristics and cultivate first-class talents with ability of innovation and modern knowledge structure.
