It is reported on July, 5th that High Performance Computing Technology Commission (HPCTC) inauguration, namely the 1st academic conference is solemnly held in Shanghai. Academician and USTC Prof. Chen, Guoliang, currently being the chairman of National High Performance Computing Center (NHPCC) at Hefei, is elected as the first chairman of HPCTC. The chairman of National Intelligence Computer Research and Development Center, Sun Ninghui, with Chi xuebin, the chairman of Computer Network and Information Center under Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is elected as the vice-chairman of HPCTC. The secretary post is taken by Li Jun, the CEO of Dawning Intelligence Industry Co. Ltd.
The HPCTC, combing production, study, and research together, is a nationwide non-profitable academic group whose members are all voluntary experts involving in high performance computing. This commission falls into the sub-committee of China Computing Federation (CCF).
The establishment of HPCTC under the realistic grounds has its own strategic significance. From 1990s’, China obtains the achievements attracting the eyesight from the global in research, production, application and other sections of high performance computers, through the joint-efforts made by scientific research units and a batch of well-known companies, including Dawning, Lenovo, Wave and so on. China has broken the seal and monopoly of the West in this sector, fighting her own developing way. The achievement of note is the high performance computer “Dawning 4000a”, processing speed at 10 trillion times per second, was deployed at Shanghai Supercomputer Center successfully last year, which marks china’s high computing technology ranking the pioneer lines worldwide. China has become the “third force” after America and Japan in this field.
At the China High Computing 10-year ceremony, the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific of CAS, and Downing Co. Ltd jointly announce the research plans that making debut the “Dawning 5000” with 100 trillion times per second processing speed before 2008 and the “Dawning 6000” with one thousand trillion times per second processing speed before 2010. Moreover, researchers will apply several china-made processors in accordance with the “Godson” ongoing research. This announcement earns wide attentions from out and in.
Form general prospective, China has a large gap comparing with the West in much wider application fields. The foreign brands stand still in key sectors and industries relating with the nation’s development and people’s life, while china-made high performance servers occupy only the comparatively less market. The other point is that middle and high performance computers can not be used widely and fully in China. The level and efficiency of their applications both run lower.
How to server the high computing technology as an impetus on civil economy and society development has been a focus matter concerned by people in variable fields. As a result, HPCTC, the first academic institution, is initiated by 19 authoritative experts in high performance computing field and 6 academicians, there being Chen Guoliang, Li Guojie, Li Bohu, Xia Peisu, Chen Zuoning, Liu Xingding. During the last half year of 2005, the members of HPCTC is up to 200, distributing in education, business, scientific research, petroleum, arms and other fields.
At the Inauguration, Academician Chen Guoliang mainly introduces the distance between China and abroad in application of high computing technology and HPCTC being a positive part in perfecting and across-the-board applying of high performance computing technology makes China-made computers and according design schemes in both hardware and software leading lines of the world, but our biggest injury in market and application. Considering this situation, the whole attending experts sign and pass “On Advancing China’s High Performance Computing Development Proposal”. They call for the government to raise strategic investments on high performance computing technology and the scientific research divisions, education institutes and business circle to improve the crossing cooperative ties, hence widen and strengthen national high performance computing industry. Meanwhile, experts propose to give support to China-made high performance computers, especially for the government. The government should take the lead to purchase and use homemade ones. |
