2005 Sino-American Seminar on Fire Safety of High Buildings Held in USTC
2005-10-10
USTC State Key Laboratory of Fire Science meets a batch of well-known scholars and experts from US Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) and Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), including Dr. William Grosshandler, Dr. Jiann C. Yang, Dr. Anthony Hamin, Dr. Kuldeep Prasad and Dr. David Evans. 2005 Sino-American Seminar on Fire Safety of High Building is solemnly held by USTC State Key Laboratory of Fire Science on 26th, September.

The opening ceremony is chaired by Prof. Liao Guangxuan, USTC standing vice director of the laboratory. Prof. Grosshandler and Academician Fan Weicheng individually give the keynote speeches under the invitation titled "Safety of Threatened Buildings Program at NIST" and "Fire Science Research at SKLFS". Besides the other 12 scholars deliver the topic reports concerning several fire safety hot issues and front-line research topics, which fully reflect the current research situations and future development trends on high-building fire science and technology. During the session, China and American both sides come to an agreement on further cooperation.

Because of the modern buildings' development trends, such as being more stylish and higher, building fires present the new features, concluding complexity, unsteadfastness and coupling. The existing fire protection ideas, fire science and technology cannot well meet these challenges. Given the above factors, international scientists and engineers have to do much deeper research on fire science, as to promote novel-typed exploitation on fire protection key technology and corresponding applications. Both sides believe that Chinese and US experts’ joining the hands together and carrying the professional cooperation will do notable contributions to worldwide fire protection science and technology development.

BFRL is under the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. It is the most authoritative laboratory of building fire safety and the best fire safety research institute which gets common admissions from the world. This laboratory owns abundant research funds, delicate instruments, top-level talents, and perfect data and information system. The software, such as FDS, CFAST, FPEtool developed by the laboratory, is used widely in the world. USTC State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, as the only China’s laboratory attending the US research plan under the official invitation, has signed joint research agreement with BFRL. 2005 Sino-American Seminar on Fire Safety of High Buildings is the significant international academic exchange move.
