For confirmation and further development of the long-term friendly relationship of cooperation and exchange between USTC and the University of Tokyo, USTC president Zhu Qinshi and president of the University of Tokyo, Takeshi Sasaki signed the agreement to extend cooperation and exchange between the two universities. The agreement became effective on March 2, 2003 with a validity period of 5 years.
USTC and the University of Tokyo first signed agreement on in 1982. At the initial stage of Reform and Open-up in the country, the academic cooperation and exchange between USTC and the University of Tokyo was undoubtedly a pioneering work with foresight and judicious judgement. In the 20 years after signing the agreement, the cooperation and exchange between the two sides achieved outstanding results not only in disciplinary construction, but also in staff construction and talent cultivation. Besides, this relationship has obtained more and more recognition from universities in both China and Japan. In 1993, the cooperation and exchange between USTC and the University of Tokyo developed into the Sino-Japanese Core Universities Program including 10 such world-renowned universities of science and engineering in both countries as Tsinghua University and Osaka University.
This extension of the inter-university agreement on cooperation and exchange fully indicates the intension that both sides will carry on new and broader cooperation and exchange on the past firm basis of cooperation and exchange.
